Jay Bennett: 11.15.1963 – 5.24.2009

I was very saddened today to learn that Jay Bennett, singer, multi-instrumentalist and former member of Wilco, passed away in his sleep early Sunday morning.  Wilco continues to be one of my great musical loves, and Jay’s contributions to their tunes are a big part of that.  Jay’s talent, musicianship, and ultimate departure from Wilco are well documented in the film, I Am Trying To Break Your Heart.

Just this morning, the sun shining bright heating up the Brooklyn streets, I felt compelled to throw on Summerteeth and blare it out the windows on summer’s first day.  Later that afternoon I learned the news…

Jay’s records will be on my ears and many others for years and years to come, and his work will live on…

Trent Gets His NIN iPhone App Approved

…unchanged none the less. After throwing a well deserved hissy fit at Apple for failing to approve the new NIN iPhone App due to some inappropriate content, by way of The Downward Spiral (the same album that is sold without issue on the iTunes Music Store), the App Store has now approved the NIN App as is. Smart movin’ Apple. To get more of the story with links to Trent’s rants, visit Engadget here.

Trent also sat down to answer fan questions via Vimeo recently.  He talks up the upcoming summer tour with Jane’s Addiction and throws in some jabs at Rivers and Prince when asked about releasing tunes from his demo archives.

Oh Get Up Kids, Don’t Hate Me, For Missing Your NY Shows

Here’s a clip from The Get Up Kids Bowery stop on the 2000 tour.  With Matthew Pryor rocking the hulked out Wolverine stylez.  TGUK played a couple of NYC shows this past weekend – Gramercy and the Bamboozle Festival in NJ, along with a reunited No Doubt.  Rumor has it the boys will be back touring the 10 year anniversary of Something To Write Home About, a la Jimmy Eat World’s Clarity x10 shows.  I was at the farewell show at Webster a couple of years back, but was out of town and missed this weekend’s round of rock.  Here’s to more “action and action” in our future…

Lenka

I don’t really know who Lenka is, but thanks to the wonders of Hypem.com I discovered her cover of Modest Mouse’s “Gravity Rides Everything.” It’s a girly folk interpretation of the Moon & Antarctica classic. Listen here.  Also her website is cool lookin’.  Happy Monday.

M83, We Own The Sky

M83 recently held a video contest for their stellar track We Own The Sky off of Saturdays=Youth.  I love that song and although this video wasn’t the contest winner, it’s aces in my book.

Can You Tell, Ra Ra Riot

Tonight, Syracuse bred Ra Ra Riot take the stage for a sold-out Webster Hall performance. Their debut full length is out now on Barsuk, and the lovelorn Can You Tell is their latest offering. I can’t get enough of this album and am very glad to finally see these guys in concert. I’ve missed them an ashamedly large number of times. No more. Tonight I’m playing catch up.

Listen to REM at SXSW

Mr. Stipe and the boys from Atlanta are ramping up for the release of next month’s Accelerate. Their 14th long player. They made a jealousy inducing appearance at SXSW last week to premiere tracks from the new one and generally remind us how much they rock. Here’s hoping the new one delivers.

Listen to REM SXSW right now at NPR.org.
